These changes have enabled support services to evolve, and in doing so, have allowed businesses, large and small, to operate in a way that is more cost effective and time efficient. Sometimes called an "On-Line Secretary", the Virtual Assistant is someone with Administrative and Secretarial skills and abilities who works in his/her own office, not yours. Many of them offer specialty skills such as writing, public relations, media liaison, and the list goes on. They may not be able to take the place of your "front of house" (your Receptionist), but your Virtual Assistant can do almost anything else your Personal Assistant, Secretary, Administrator, Book Keeper or Clerk currently undertakes at your office. Outsourcing these duties to your Virtual Assistant will save your business time and money. The Virtual Assistant is not an employee, and as such is not paid holiday pay or sick leave. There is no requirement that you pay superannuation, payroll or other government charges such as the workers' compensation levy. You pay only for the time it takes your Virtual Assistant to complete the work, plus any expenses necessarily incurred. That may be once or twice per week or per month. It may be short but regular assignments such as a design, production and dissemination of a quarterly newsletter. A Virtual Assistant can be extremely valuable when you have a deadline to meet and there are not enough hands on deck!
